Album Review: Maoli – Rock Easy
For those of you that have enjoyed the sounds from the first Maoli album, I know you are going to enjoy this album as well. If you listen to any of the Hawaii radio stations then you probably have already heard their single “Whisper.” Whisper was a great way to transition from their first album into Rock Easy. Trust me when I say that you will not be disappointed when you finally have the Rock Easy album in your hands. Don’t be surprised when you are caught skankin in front of your friends and be ready to pull up your man/woman when the ballads come on. The first track will remind you of a Katchafire track which isn’t a bad thing at all. My overall favorite track off of the Rock Easy album is track 8 called “Fight Another Day” featuring B.U.B. If the name B.U.B. sounds familiar, you might recall him from Ekolu’ “I’ll Be Good To You.” Maoli brings a familiar yet refreshing sound of jazz with “Sing Out Loud.” Last but certainly not least, if you are a music head like I am, then you might go crazy trying to find out what the last song “You In My Life” sounds like. It actually has the sound of two R&B soul tracks: Tamia – “Officially Missing You” (beat) and Monica “Before You Walk Out Of My Life” (flow of lyrics). It just seems that no matter what song they are singing that their overall feel is so mellow that it shoots irie vibes down your veins. Most definitely recommend buying the album to anyone when it is released to music outlets. This album is scheduled for a release date of August 10, 2010.
Overall Album Rating: 8.5/10
If you want to know more about Maoli, here is their bio from their website:
“Maoli was formed in the beginning of 2008. As they were forming the group, they wanted a name that had strong meaning, a name that represents who they are and where they come from. Maoli means “Native” in the Hawaiian language. The group consists of 5 members, Glenn Awong-lead vocalist and guitar, Cory Lum-lead vocalist and guitar, Huber Kaina-lead vocalist and keyboards, Kakana Akiu-Corpuz-bass and Matthew Casil-drums. The fact of the group being born and raised in Hawaii, they share a strong passion for island reggae music. They all started playing at a young age at about 7 or 8 years old. November of 2008 they released their 1st full length album entitled “Groovin” on Pacific Island Records. The albums lead single “No one” soon became the #1 most requested song on almost every major radio station in the state of Hawaii followed by “Write me a letter” and “So incredible”. Their love and passion for the music is seen in their live performance and in their material they produce. Maoli continues to travel far and wide to share their music with the world. They have done shows on the west coast and all throughout Hawaii, playing in front of crowds up to 16,000 plus. They continue to strive to become a staple group in Hawaii island reggae music scene.”
